Notes on the Limits of CLIR Effectiveness: NTCIR-2 Evaluation Experiments at Justsystem

چکیده

NTCIR-2 evaluation experiments at the Justsystem site are described with a focus on comparative study of CLIR effectiveness with monolingual retrieval effectiveness of the same retrieval engine. Experiments on the effects of phrasal translation, indexing of translated phrasal terms, pre-translation feedback and parallel documents feedback in diverse retrieval settings, are reported. The results show that pre-translation pseudorelevance feedback is always effective. We confirmed that phrasal translation is effective and crucial even the retrieval system does not use phrasal indexing units.

Justsystem-Clairvoyance CLIR Experiments at NTCIR-4 Workshop

At the NTCIR-4 workshop, Justsystem Corporation and Clairvoyance Corporation collaborated in participating in the Cross-Language Retrieval Task (CLIR). We submitted results to the sub-tracks of SLIR and BLIR. For the SLIR track, we submitted Chinese, English, and Japanese monolingual runs. For the BLIR track, we submitted Japanese-English and Chinese-English runs. The major goal of our particip...

Overview of CLIR Task at the Fifth NTCIR Workshop

The purpose of this paper is to overview research efforts at the NTCIR-5 CLIR task, which is a project of large-scale retrieval experiments on cross-lingual information retrieval (CLIR) of Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and English. The project has three sub-tasks, multi-lingual IR (MLIR), bilingual IR (BLIR), and single language IR (SLIR), in which many research groups from over ten countries are ...

A Decade after TREC-4 - NTCIR-5 CLIR-J-J Experiments at Yahoo!Japan

This paper describes NTCIR-5 experiments of the CLIR-J-J task, i.e. Japanese monolingual retrieval subtask, at the Yahoo group, focusing on comparative studies of the feedback effectiveness with two retrieval methods, namely BM25TF*IDF and a KL-divergence language modeling approaches. An “automatic feedback from top k documents” strategy was surprisingly successful in this test collection. We c...

Ranking the NTCIR Systems Based on Multigrade Relevance

At NTCIR-4, new retrieval effectiveness metrics called Q-measure and R-measure were proposed for evaluation based on multigrade relevance. This paper shows that Q-measure inherits both the reliability of noninterpolated Average Precision and the multigrade relevance capability of Average Weighted Precision through a theoretical analysis, and then verify the above claim through experiments by ac...
